Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing the May Day Rally at the Campbell Park yesterday (1st May) said that the government is starting the development drive and requested everybody’s support.
“We should earn money to repay the loans and also generate Jobs to increase the income of the people.”
He said, if the country is developed, the export income can be increased. “It is our aim to double the export income. We will be able to further increase our export income with the regaining of the GSP Plus concession”, he said and added “We have a target. It is to increase the income of the working class. To achieve this target we have to double the export income.”
He said that they were able to stable the collapsed economy of the country within a year and added that he is proud to say that there is a conducive environment in the country to restart factories. The country has got the support from the international community too. Sri Lankan will be able to export more than 6,000 goods to Europe with the regaining of the GSP Plus concession.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe further said that the country has agreed to start many projects with Japan, which includes the development of the Port of Colombo, beginning work on a new port north of the existing Colombo Port, Western Province Megapolis Project, development of Kandy city, Development of Trincomalee harbor, and digitalization of television services. India has agreed to start work on a LNG Plant in Kerawalapitiya this year, he added. In addition, India and Japan are scheduled to start work on two LNG Plants within a month.
He said that India also assured their support to develop the Trincomalee harbor as well as invest. As well, Sri Lanka will provide necessary fuel storage facilities to India from Trincomalee. The demand for fuel in India will be increased within the next 50 years. Since they don’t have such storage facilities, we can offer our storage facilities to them and thereby earn money.
The Premier further explained that there are number of projects in line to develop the economic situation of the North of the country.
“The United National Front will come forward and protect the country. We will develop the country, secure your future and create a powerful Sri Lanka (Balagathu Sri Lankawak). It is no need to emphasis that we would surely get a mandate even in 2020”, PM Wickremesingeh said.
